Movie Theaters Shake, Smell and Spritz

Movie Theaters Shake, Smell and Spritz:

Brooks Barnes on theaters in America (like those in China) trying to appeal to and draw in younger moviegoers:

To combat the problem, theater chains seem increasingly open to trying just about anything. Regal, for instance, in June began offering something called 4DX in downtown Los Angeles. More than 100 seats buck and dip in close synchronization with the action on the screen. Compressed air blasts from headrests to simulate flying bullets. Fans provide a gentle wind effect.

There are two types of water effects: rain, which drops from the ceiling, and mist, which is squirted from the seat in front of you. (Patrons can turn off the water by pressing a button.)

Best case: this sounds like a bunch of stupid gimmicks that won’t last. Worst case: this sounds like a torture chamber.

They have this in many theaters in Korea where I live. It is actually pretty cool, but ticket prices are much more reasonable. The super-upgraded 4dx tickets are $18 compared to regular tickets at $10. So much cheaper than the USA. Not sure whether 4dx is feasible at whatever people will charge for it in America. $30?

I'm not sure what the market will bear here. I don't feel the experience is worth more than 15$, I'd probably spurge for 18$ if it was something like Interstellar.

Eh, Disney has done this successfully for years in their theme parks. The only difference is, the Disney attractions that incorporate all this tech generally aren't over 15 minutes in length. I can't imagine seeing a 2 hour blockbuster in this setting.
